South Staffordshire Water operates across two regions as Cambridge Water and South Staffs Water, and is a privately-owned regulated water only company.
South Staffs Water supplies a population of nearly 1.3 million. The area of supply stretches from the edge of Ashbourne in the North, to Halesowen in the South, and from Burton-on-Trent in the East, to Kinver in the West.
The Role:
South Staffs Water is seeking a skilled and motivated Capital Works Designer to join our Network Investment Delivery team.
Reporting to the Infrastructure Programme Manager, you will play a pivotal role in designing and delivering capital schemes that support the efficient operation, regulatory compliance, and long-term resilience of our water distribution network.
This is a hands-on, technical design role that combines engineering expertise with stakeholder collaboration. You will be responsible for producing high-quality, compliant design packages that enable safe, cost-effective construction across a variety of projects, including new mains, diversions, and network enhancements
Key Responsibilities:
- Design new water mains (company-lay, self-lay, and NAV schemes) in line with Developer Services requirements and SLAs
- Deliver mains diversion designs to support regulatory and performance commitments
- Develop reinforcement solutions to meet network capacity and demand requirements
- Review and approve third-party design submissions, ensuring compliance with standards and specifications
- Interpret feasibility studies and produce detailed, construction-ready design packs
- Define and manage trial hole requirements, ensuring accurate and timely data collection
- Monitor and report on contractor performance relating to trial hole activities
- Ensure all designs comply with CDM regulations, including appropriate documentation and HSE notifications
- Engage with external stakeholders and highway authorities to coordinate works and secure approvals
- Collaborate with construction partners to develop practical and cost-effective solutions
- Challenge and improve existing mains rehabilitation processes where appropriate
- Produce accurate AutoCAD drawings for all schemes
- Support Project Managers with scheme pack delivery and design amendments
- Contribute to additional capital schemes including DMAs, PRVs, trunk main meters, and control valves
- Provide support across the wider Capital Investment Delivery Directorate
- Participate in cross-functional teams and project meetings
Requirements
What You’ll Need:
- HNC (or equivalent) in an Engineering discipline
- NRSWA Streetworks Certificate
- Strong understanding of water distribution systems and network operations
- Working knowledge of CDM regulations and design-stage requirements
- Proficiency in CAD and general IT systems
- Strong report-writing and documentation skills
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently at all levels
- Full, valid UK driving licence
- IOSH Working Safely certification (Desirable)
- Understanding of the Traffic Management Act (Desirable)
